Before we get started Puerto Rico was hit by an earthquake on Jan 6th, 2020. If you find it in your heart please donate. If you’re unsure of where to donate check out the ones I donated to:
#1 Tomate – Authetic Mexican food 10/10
Address: 61 Av. Isla Verde Suite 3062, Carolina, 00979, Puerto Rico
What I ordered: quesadillas with churrasco (steak) & a shrimp queso (appetizer)
This was the first place we ate at once we left the airport. Truth is we were tired, and this was close to the airbnb. This had to be the best Mexican food I’ve had (and I’ve been to many, because I love it so much) in my life. This was truly authentic and the FLAVOR…wow magnificent. I ended up being basic and getting quesadilla’s, and for some flare added steak (pay close attention, because churrasco/steak will be mentioned ALOT). I’m not sure what the chef had going on but that quesadilla took me to another world! It was superb. We also got some shrimp queso for the table, and it was delightful. I highly recommend it, because the shrimp had this lovely smoked flavor that was TO DIE FOR! Also they give you these amazing sauces with the queso + chips. If you take anything from this section PLEASE understand that you need to drizzle the sauces on EVERY food item you get! #youvebeenwarned #thesaucesareAMAZING
#2 La Casita Blanca – Like eating at Grandma’s
Address: 351 Calle Tapia, San Juan 00912-4214 Puerto Rico
What I ordered: avocado (half) stuffed with lobster meat, and a side of mofongo. Complimentary: small bow of rice soup & fried codfish fritters (aka bacalaitos).
I couldn’t wait to taste some authentic Puerto Rican food. At the airport EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE, told us we had to try mofongo.

Mofongo - fried plantain mashed with some form of meat in it or on top it. Basically SUPER tasty.
As a West Indian woman I thought I had seen everything that could be done with fried plantain, I was wrong, and couldn’t wait to taste this bad boy. This restaurant is in the middle of san Juan, and is the cutest little White House turned into a restaurant. It has beautiful vintage vibes, and you feel like you’re at your grandma’s just coming to grab a quick plate. The only menu is a chalkboard with what’s available for the day (this is common and awesome). If you’re like me and your Spanish isn’t up to par download #yelp. They have stellar reviews and PICTURES. The servers were great in explaining everything, and recommending what was best if you struggled with the menu.
